Students interested in teaching should consult with the Department of Urban Education during their first or second year. Students interested in certification must apply to the program and declare their college major in the department offering that major. Application to the Teacher Education Program should be made after completing 21:300:292 Social Foundations of Urban Education.
The entry requirements for the Teacher Education Program are:
- 2.8 undergraduate GPA
- a grade of B or better in English Composition, 2 semesters
- an expectation of a B or better in college algebra or math for liberal arts
- an expectation of B or better in 2 semesters of a laboratory science
- a grade of B or better in Social Foundations of Urban Education (21:300:292)
Requirements for proceeding to Student Teaching are:
- 2.8 undergraduate GPA
- no more than one grade below B in the Teacher Education Program
- one course focusing on one of the cultures represented in New Jersey's urban school populations (may also satisfy the general curriculum requirements)
- health exam or biology course
- passing Praxis score. Candidates should consult the ETS Praxis website for New Jersey to determine the appropriate test.
