Course topics in the art history concentration range from the study of ancient to contemporary art and include classes on non-Western art and critical studies. The program consists of 16 courses earning 48 credits: a required group of foundation courses, studio courses, required art history courses, a critical studies course, a senior thesis, and art history electives. Through their studies of the history of art, students acquire not only an understanding of artistic styles within their cultural context, but also they are introduced to the many methodological and theoretical avenues through which the history of art may be investigated. In addition to courses in art history, students have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of internships in the metropolitan region in museums and nonprofit art-related institutions. Over the course of their studies, art history students hone their writing and research skills and are introduced to the variety of professional applications of their degree, from academia to museums to the corporate world. Credit requirements for a concentration in art history are the same as those for the art and design concentration, except that only 12 credits are required in the foundation program and the 18-credit specialization area is in art history courses at the 200-level and above, selected in consultation with an adviser. The 6-credit senior seminar is required during the senior year to produce a written thesis.
