First-year students admitted into the Newark College of Arts and Sciences must take the ACCUPLACER placement test in mathematics and writing. However, those students with verbal SAT scores of 550 or higher are automatically placed into English Composition 101. Students with advanced placement (AP) credits in English with scores of 4 or better, and those students with AP courses in Calculus I and Calculus II with scores of 4 or better, meet the college proficiency requirements for those areas.
Transfer students who have completed 12 or more college credits at the time of admission may be required to take the ACCUPLACER placement test in mathematics and writing. Based on the results of these tests, students are placed in the appropriate mathematics and writing courses.
