Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, prohibits
discrimination and harassment based upon race, religion, color, national
origin, ancestry, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression,
disability, genetic information, atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait,
marital status, civil union status, domestic partnership status, military
service, veteran status, and any other category protected by law. Discrimination and harassment compromise the
integrity of the university and unfairly interfere with the opportunity for all
persons to fully participate in the academic, work, and living environment of
the university. While promoting an environment free from discrimination is
everyone's responsibility, the following staff members have been designated to
respond to:
Complaints against a Student
Anne Newman, Director, Office of Student Conduct (732-932-9414 ext. 104, or
amnewma@rci.rutgers.edu).
Complaints against an Employee
Jayne M. Grandes, Director, Office of Employment Equity
(848-932-3980 or grandes@rutgers.edu).
Title IX
of the Education Amendments of 1972
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that
prohibits sex discrimination in education. It reads:
"No person in the United States shall,
on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits
of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity
receiving Federal financial assistance."
Sex
discrimination includes sexual harassment and sexual assault. While it is often thought of as a law that
applies to athletics programs, Title IX is much broader than athletics and
applies to many programs at Rutgers. While compliance with the law is everyone's responsibility at the
university, listed below are the staff members who have primary responsibility
for Title IX compliance:
Complaints against a Student
Judy Ryan, Title IX Coordinator, Office of Student Affairs Compliance (848-932-8576 or ryan@oldqueens.rutgers.edu).
Anne Newman, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, Office of Student
Conduct (732-932-9414, ext. 104, or amnewma@rci.rutgers.edu).
Complaints against a student may be filed online at https://publicdocs.maxient.com/incidentreport.php?RutgersUniv.
Complaints against an Employee
Kathryn Bannai, Title IX Coordinator, Office of Employment Equity
(848-932-3979 or kathryn.bannai@rutgers.edu).
Jayne M. Grandes, Director, Office of Employment Equity
(848-932-3980 or grandes@rutgers.edu).
