The academic requirements for the doctorate include at least 48 credits of coursework (including up to 9 transfer credits from the master's degree), successful completion of two comprehensive examinations, and the completion of an acceptable doctoral dissertation. The purpose of the comprehensive examinations is to test basic working familiarity with concepts in the field of public administration and to demonstrate research proficiency in the student's areas of specialization.
Core curriculum classes typically meet Monday through Friday afternoons. Courses offered through other campus departments usually meet in the early evenings. Students may also take independent study or courses offered at other Rutgers locations as electives.
