Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) Programs

The Difference between a D.N.P. and a Ph.D.

The doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in nursing will remain the accepted degree for nurse scientists. A Ph.D. in nursing prepares nurse scientists who will GENERATE EVIDENCE to guide effective and safe nursing care, whereas a doctor of nursing practice (D.N.P.) degree prepares "practice" experts who will TRANSLATE EVIDENCE into practice across a variety of patient care settings.

Leadership Focused D.N.P.

The D.N.P. degree in leadership is designed for nurses who are on the leadership trajectory. Graduates of this program are expected to lead health care organizations by providing:
  1. Evidence-based leadership;
  2. Creating healthful work environments; and
  3. Influencing quality and safety outcomes for clients.
The Essentials of the Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice, the Magnet Model Components, American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses competencies are embedded in this program. Graduates of this program will contribute to the discipline of nursing through innovation and translation of evidence into leadership practice.

Clinical Focused D.N.P.

The goals of the Clinical Focused Doctorate of Nursing Practice Programs are to prepare advanced practice nurses who:
  1. Are clinical experts
  2. Provide leadership to affect change
  3. Translate research into evidence-based practice
