The entomology major is the study of insects and their arthropod relatives. Insects are one of the most diverse and abundant organisms on the planet and play important roles in their ecosystems. Insects are exceptional models for understanding fundamental aspects of genetics, ecology, and evolution. Society benefits from diverse roles of insects as critical pollinators, sources of food in agricultural and wildlife food chains, as well as decomposers; on the flip side, many insects as well as ticks pose a danger to human health, our structures, and agriculture. Students in the Entomology major gain career opportunities in corporate and private agribusiness, urban pest management companies, scientific and technical organizations, public health agencies, local, state, and federal governments, and international organizations. Employment also exists in conservation biology, scientific policy, and environmental quality assurance. Our curriculum is flexible so students may expand their knowledge to interdisciplinary areas to meet their career goals.
