Major Requirements
The Italian studies major provides students with
intermediate proficiency in the Italian language, and a comprehensive
understanding of the peoples, history, language, literature, and arts of Italy
and the Italian diaspora from antiquity through the present. The Italian studies major consists of 12 courses.
Students pursuing the major typically follow the sequence below:- 01:560:131 Intermediate Italian I
- 01:560:132 Intermediate Italian II
- 01:560:321 Advanced Conversation through Current Events or 01:560:322 Advanced Conversation through Cinema
- 01:560:231 Italian Culture I (required)
- 01:560:232 Italian Culture II (required)
The remaining seven
courses are chosen from the Italian studies course list.
Requirements
and Exceptions
Italian studies majors must achieve proficiency in Italian by taking at least three courses in the
Italian language, beginning with 01:560:131 (Intermediate Italian I).
Students who place
above 01:560:131 (Intermediate Italian I) are required to take an additional
200- or 300-level class in Italian (250; 302; 305; 306; etc.).
01:560:231 Italian
Culture I and 01:560:232 Italian Culture II are required.
1.5-credit courses do
not count toward the major.
Students must earn a
minimum grade of C to count the course toward the major.
The student's program
must be approved by the undergraduate director.
Italian Studies Minor
The Italian studies minor consists of six courses.
At least three of the six courses must be taken in the Italian
language, beginning at the level of 01:560:131 Intermediate Italian or above.
Students who place above 01:560:131 (Intermediate Italian I) are required to
take two additional 200- or 300-level classes in Italian (250; 302; 305; 306,
etc.).
A maximum of three courses in English will count toward the minor.
Students must earn a minimum grade of C to count the course
toward the minor.
1.5-credit courses will not count toward either the major or the minor.
Three additional 200- and 300-level courses forming a coherent set are to be chosen from the Departments of Art History, Classics, History, or
Music.
The student's program
must be approved by the undergraduate director.Honors in Italian Studies
Students with a 3.0 or better grade-point average and an average of 3.5 or
better in the major will be invited to write an honors thesis, which may be
supervised by any Italian studies faculty member. The thesis project may earn
up to 6 credits toward the Italian studies major.
