The study of history allows students to understand the past as well as the present--how and why our world became the way it is today. The Department of History
offers an array of two hundred course offerings and many research
opportunities. The courses are designed to (1) provide the student with an understanding of the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped the course of history and our present world; and (2) teach the student the important
skills of critical reading and research, logical analysis, and effective written and oral communication.
Students should begin with introductory-level courses (100
or 200), proceed to the upper-level courses that are at the center of the
history major (300), and finally to the advanced courses (400), which usually
require significant research.
The history major is designed to expose students to the
histories of various civilizations over time and place. However, it also
affords specialization in one area, time, or theme (e.g., African history,
medieval Europe, or women in history, etc.) to interested students, in consultation
with departmental advisers.
