01:165:210 The Chinese Language: Description and History (3) Phonology, grammar, and the writing system of Mandarin Chinese; brief discussion of other major dialects of China; the influence of the Chinese language on Asian languages; and the role of language in Chinese culture.
01:165:211 Language and Identity in Modern Chinese Societies (3) Introduction to fundamental concepts in sociolinguistics and current issues in language and society in China and the Chinese diaspora, including language and ethnic identity, migrant identity, gender identity, national identity, and language and identity under modernization and globalization.
01:165:215 Introduction to Chinese Civilization (3) Material and cultural achievements of Chinese civilization, including such areas as the fine arts, literature, religion, and thought, with emphasis on individuals, institutions, events, and ideas that shaped Chinese history.

01:165:463 Nature in Chinese Literature (3) An examination of the representations of nature in major Chinese literary genres and human relations to nature during the early and medieval periods. Special attention paid to general shifts in conceptions of nature as well as larger questions of experience, perception, and representation.

01:165:471 Early China in the World - Cosmography, Epistemology, and Encountering the Strange (3) An interdisciplinary examination of the perspectives from which early Chinese perceived themselves, their realm, the world, and beyond from High Antiquity to the medieval period.
01:165:473 The Silk Road: A History of Cultural and Material Exchanges (3) An interdisciplinary introduction to the history of the Silk Road with a focus on the cultural and material exchanges between the peoples and cultures it connected over the period 500 BCE to 1500 CE. Credit not give for both this course and 01:098:473.
01:165:476 Women in Premodern China (3) An interdisciplinary seminar on women in premodern China with a focus on their roles in shaping Chinese cultural, political, religious, and social practices.
01:165:480 Cultural Memory in Contemporary China (3) Examines the representation of cultural memories in contemporary Chinese-speaking communities. Study of key primary, theoretical, and methodological texts on cultural memory.
01:165:482 Cold War Chinese Literature and Film (3) Examines Chinese literary modernity from the vantage point of the 1949 Cold War division in East Asia. Explores questions of revolution, migration, diaspora, colonialism, socialist realism, the captive mind, and the cultural Cold War through literature and film.
01:165:484 Youth Culture in Global Chinese Films (3) Through film analysis and criticism, this course examines youth as a particular cultural category to explore rapid changes that mark contemporary global Chinese-language communities.
01:165:486 Women in Modern Chinese Literature and Film (3) This course examines the representation of gender and sexuality in modern Chinese literature and film from the early 20th century to the present by discussing a wide range of key literary and filmic texts created in mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
01:165:493,494 Independent Study (3,3) Supervised independent reading and study of a topic selected by the student and approved by the instructor. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and department.
