Majors must complete 12 courses (at least 36 credits), either offered by the Department of Jewish Studies or cross-listed by the department, with a grade of C or better in each course, according to one of the following two tracks:
Track A: Jewish Studies Major
Required courses:
- 01:563:201 Jewish Society and Culture I: From Antiquity to the Middle Ages (3), preferably taken before junior year
- 01:563:202 Jewish Society and Culture II: The Early Modern and Modern Experience (3), preferably taken before the junior year
- 01:563:464 Research and Writing in Jewish Studies (3), normally taken during the second semester of junior year
Elective courses: Nine elective courses (at least 3 credits each), of which at least three courses must be 300 level or above; the other six courses may be 100- or 200-level courses. At least one elective must be a course (at any level) in premodern Jewish history, literature, or culture, and at least one elective must be a course (at any level) in modern Jewish history, literature, or culture.
Track B: Jewish Studies Major with Advanced Language
Required courses:
- 01:563:201 Jewish Society and Culture I: From Antiquity to the Middle Ages (3), preferably taken before junior year
- 01:563:202 Jewish Society and Culture II: The Early Modern and Modern Experience (3), preferably taken before the junior year
- At least two courses (at least 3 credits each) in one Jewish language (either Hebrew or Yiddish) to reach the level of proficiency. Proficiency for Hebrew requires completing Intermediate Hebrew (563:132) or higher. At least two semesters of Hebrew language must be taken at Rutgers. Proficiency in Yiddish requires the equivalent of two years of language study; students interested in Yiddish proficiency should meet with the undergraduate director in the department to discuss study options.
