Study Abroad Programs in Italy

Summer Program in Italy

Each summer the Department of Italian offers a program in Italy that lasts six weeks and offers an opportunity to earn 6 to 8 credits. It also provides excursions and other extracurricular activities to acquaint students more fully with everyday life in Italy today. Offerings typically include 01:560:101,102; 131,132; 321,322; 491,492; and courses on Italian culture taught in English. Inquiries should be addressed to the Department of Italian.

Ferrara

Two types of programs are offered in the city of Ferrara.

I. Language and Culture is ideal for students with little or no knowledge of Italian. Content courses are taught in English alongside intensive Italian-language classes. The classes, which are specifically designed for U.S. undergraduates, are held at the CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) Study Center. (academic year, fall, spring)

II. Liberal Arts is geared toward students with intermediate to advanced Italian language skills who seek to immerse themselves in the language and culture of Italy. It involves intensive language study together with content courses taught in Italian. Most classes will be held at the CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) Study Center, although advanced students may sign up for courses at the University of Ferrara (founded in 1391). (academic year, fall, spring)

Florence International Studies Institute

The International Studies Institute (ISI) at Palazzo Rucellai is an academic institution specifically intended for students from American universities who wish to study abroad in Florence. Palazzo Rucellai offers a variety of courses in Italian language, agriculture and food sciences, art history, architecture, history, political science, literature, psychology, business administration, and studio art. Classes are taught by distinguished faculty from Palazzo Rucellai. Students who are fluent in Italian may also be able to take one or two classes at the University of Florence. The program is housed in Palazzo Rucellai, located in the very center of Florence. Palazzo Rucellai is a Renaissance palace well known by art historians and architects alike for its façade designed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti in the 15th century. (See Study Abroad in this catalog).

Rome

John Cabot University (JCU), an American-style liberal arts university, is situated right in the heart of Rome. The university, founded in 1972, welcomes approximately 600 study abroad students a year, and offers a four-year education to some 200 Italian and international students. (academic year, summer, fall, spring)

Interested students should apply early in the second semester of the freshman or sophomore year by contacting the Rutgers Center for Global Education, 102 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901-8543; or visit the website.
