Students may elect a music minor consisting of at least 18 credits, distributed as follows: (1) at least 6 credits in music theory (example: 07:700:103 which is also offered online as 07:700:133 and 700:104); (2) at least 6 credits in music history; and (3) 6 elective credits in music.
The courses most commonly used for music history are: Introduction to Music (07:700:101), which is also offered online as 07:700:131, and Introduction to Music History (07:700:102). The Music History requirement may also be satisfied by the following courses: Studies in Music History (07:700:211, 212), which is also offered online as 07:700:231, 232; Studies in Major Composers (07:700:237, 238); Special Topics in Music (07:700:295, 296); and Jazz Appreciation and Black Music, which is offered only online as 07:700:234.
The electives may be satisfied by further courses in music theory or music history, by ensemble participation, and by some approved music-related courses from other departments. At least 6 of the 18 credits required for the minor must be taken at Rutgers. Exceptions to the prescribed distribution of requirements must be approved by the Mason Gross School of the Arts Department of Music coordinator of undergraduate studies.
