The major in exercise science and sport studies offers four options: the applied kinesiology option, the exercise science option, the exercise physiology option, and the sport management option.
To graduate with the exercise science and sport studies major, students must have at least a 2.0 grade-point average from the required courses within the applied kinesiology option or the sport management option, or a 3.0 in the exercise science option or the exercise physiology option.
Entrance into the exercise science and sport studies major for the three science options is through the applied kinesiology option. Students may enter the sport management option directly. An interview with the department chair and a minimum of a 2.0 grade-point average is required prior to admission to the program. Students become eligible to declare the major in either the applied kinesiology option or the sport management option after earning a minimum of a "C" in three specific courses within their option:
For all science options:
General Biology (01:119:101)
General Biology (01:119:102)
Basic Statistics for Exercise Science (01:377:275
or its equivalent)
For sport management option:
Sport and the Law (01:377:203)
Risk Management in Sport Administration (01:377:204)
Basic Statistics for Exercise Science (01:377:275
or its equivalent)
These requirements are waived for transfer students if they had a
strong academic record at their previous academic institution and are approved
by an exercise science academic adviser. In addition, all students must receive approval to declare the major
from the department chair at an orientation session.
After admission to the major in the applied kinesiology option,
students with less than 90 credits toward graduation and a 2.85 grade-point
average in a minimum of 12 credits toward the major may apply for admission to
either the exercise science option or the exercise physiology option. Students
with 90 credits or more (senior status) must have a minimum of a 3.0 overall
and in the major courses within their chosen option in order to enter or to
remain in either the exercise science option or the exercise physiology option.
Students who drop below the minimum grade-point average of 3.00 after attaining
90 credits will automatically be placed in the applied kinesiology option.
