Students majoring in Spanish must choose one of three options: Literary and Cultural Studies (LCS), Spanish Linguistics (Linx), or Spanish Translation/Interpreting (TI). In each option, all credits are required unless students 1) are placed out of courses by the university's placement test, 2) successfully complete an advanced placement test and are granted credit by the department, and/or 3) receive special permission for an exception from a departmental adviser. Students are responsible for consulting the catalog course listing for a description of prerequisites and special conditions prior to registration. All courses counted toward any major option require a grade of C or better, unless otherwise specified. All major programs must be reviewed and approved by a departmental adviser. For all three options, with the approval of a departmental adviser, students may count up to 6 elective credits in Portuguese (810) at the 200-400 level toward the Spanish major. For the option in LCS and Linx, up to 6 credits of courses taught in a language other than Spanish may count for the Spanish major if all written work is done in Spanish and if these courses are approved and corroborated by a departmental adviser.
