Most instructional units offer independent study to students for
individual and small-group study under the supervision of faculty
members. Students must submit a detailed description of proposed
independent projects to faculty members who agree to supervise the
work. A project must be approved by the faculty sponsor and by the
appropriate department head or faculty committee before the student
registration can be completed. First-year students are not allowed to
take independent study or out-of-the classroom experience. No more than
30 credits of a student's work toward a degree may consist of
independent study or internship.
