Rutgers Cancer Institute of New
Jersey is the state's first and only National Cancer
Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. As one of only 40 such
centers nationwide, the Cancer Institute is dedicated to improving the prevention, detection,
treatment, and care of patients with cancer, through the transformation of
laboratory discoveries into clinical practice. The Cancer Institute is committed to learning more about cancer and making its
discoveries available to the public to aid in disease prevention. At the Cancer Institute,
laboratory research is supported by more than $99 million annually in
cancer-related research grants. Research is being conducted in areas including
oncogenes, epidemiology, chemical carcinogenesis, tumor virology and
immunology, drug development and resistance, the relationship between cellular
and genetic alterations and tumor development, bioinformatics, and cancer
genomics. Cancer Institute researchers hold faculty positions at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and Princeton University. Basic scientists, clinical researchers,
and scientists who study cancer prevention and control within the general
population meet regularly to exchange information and ensure that laboratory
discoveries are refined and applied to clinical care as quickly as possible;
that clinical observations reach laboratory researchers on a continuing basis;
and that prevention strategies are interwoven into all research programs.
