The Nanomaterials Laboratory (NML) is supported through federally funded research programs such as the Office of Naval Research, Department of Energy, and by industry such as Exxon Mobil, among others. The mission of the NML is to conduct research at the forefront of materials science and engineering on advanced materials areas and to promote industry-university collaborative efforts. NML's research activities make extensive use of ultrahigh energy X-ray synchrotron probes in the study of nanostructured materials with special emphasis on multiscale 3-D strain and phase mapping of engineering materials, stress-corrosion cracking phenomena, mechanical behavior of multiphase nanostructured coatings, fatigue fracture in engineering alloys, behavior of nanomaterials under high pressure and temperatures, and electric field assisted processing of ceramics. The NML has made substantial and world-recognized contributions to materials characterization by developing a unique energy-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction method and metrology, which enabled it to assume a commanding position in the field of in situ characterization of advanced materials at the nano- and microscale phenomena with unprecedented 3-D space and time resolution.
