Students with an interest in human-environment relationships may pursue, in addition to regular programs of studies, a special concentration in human dimensions of environmental change. The certificate program is defined by two main research areas: One strand of research, often ecological and institutional in emphasis, addresses changes in natural resources, land-cover, and industrial metabolism. The second strand--often perceptual, behavioral, and/or political--focuses on risk, vulnerability, and inequity. In both fields, research accomplishment requires competence in interdisciplinary approaches and methods. Students who fulfill the following requirements will receive a Certificate in Human Dimensions of Environmental Change, signifying special achievement in the field. To receive the certificate, students must complete (in addition to requirements in their major), one course in a participating program outside their major, focusing on human dimensions of environmental change. Students must also complete the two seminars described below.
