Master of Music Degree in Music Education


The program of study leading to the master of music (M.M.) degree in music education is designed for practicing music teachers who possess a teaching certificate and have at least one year of full-time K-12 music teaching experience.

Required Course of Study (a total of 30 credits, which are distributed as follows):

1. Four courses (12 credits) in music education:

Required Courses:

  • 08:702:513  Philosophical Foundations of Music Education (3)
  • 08:702:514  Graduate Research in Music Education (3)

Electives in Music Education (choose two from the following):

  • 08:702:538  Proseminar in Music Education (3) (may be repeated with different content)
  • 08:702:539  Behavioral and Cognitive Approaches to Music Learning (3)

2. Two courses (6 credits) in music theory, to be selected with the graduate adviser's approval.

3. Two courses (6 credits) in music history, to be selected with the graduate adviser's approval.

4. 6 credits of electives acceptable for graduate credit in either music, music education, and/or education.

*The master's of music degree in music education online program offers online elective courses permissible pending adviser approval.


In addition, every student must take a comprehensive written examination in music education. 

Students in music education are not guaranteed lessons but may take them if space is available.
