Transfer Credit

Graduate courses completed at other institutions may be accepted for credit at the university. Transfer credits refer to credits earned at another institution (including another graduate school within the Rutgers system) before the student enrolls at Rutgers-Camden.

Students in master's degree programs are allowed to transfer in a maximum of one-third of the credits required for their degree. This number is the maximum allowed for transfer into the Graduate School–Camden (one-third of credits includes transient credits and transfer credits combined). Individual programs may impose a lower limit if it is deemed appropriate, and the acceptance of any and all courses for graduate credit is at the discretion of the program director. Application for such credit may be made by the student only after completing at least 12 credits with grades of B or better at the Graduate School–Camden. A course may be considered for transfer if the following requirements are met:

1. The course must have been graded. Neither Pass nor Satisfactory grades can be accepted as transfer credit.

2. The student must have earned a grade of B or better in the course.

3. The course cannot include work for a thesis, independent study, or research.

4. The course must form a part of the student's program.

5. The course must have been taken during the six-year period prior to the application for transfer of credit.

6. The course must have been taken at an accredited institution of higher education.

7. The course must not have been counted for credit toward another degree.*

In applying for transfer of credit, a student must obtain an official transcript of the grades to be transferred and complete a transfer of credit application. The transfer of credit application and the official transcript should be submitted to the student's graduate program director for approval. The graduate program director then submits both to the dean for review and final authorization. When the transfer is approved, the registrar's office records the transfer of credits on the student's transcript.

For doctoral programs, the graduate director may petition the dean of the Graduate School–Camden to waive the number of transfer credits allowed. In addition, coursework completed for a master's degree may be applied toward the doctoral degree.

*A master's program is permitted to accept up to 9 academic credits (14 for a 42-credit program) earned from relevant graduate coursework completed in another graduate program at Rutgers-Camden whether or not those credits are applied toward another advanced degree, pursued either simultaneously or sequentially. This policy does not apply to dual-degree programs that are approved separately by the Graduate School–Camden. In cases where courses have been applied to an advanced degree at another institution, transfer credit is permitted only with the special permission of the program director and the dean of the graduate school.
