Admission Requirements

An application form is available online or by calling 856-225-6104. Applicants to the graduate liberal studies program should have a grade-point average of B or better in their undergraduate major.

The application packet must include:

  • An official transcript (3.0 GPA preferred).
  • Two letters of recommendation from former professors or other people who can comment on your intellectual abilities and academic skills. Recommendations from employers, friends, or relatives are not as useful. If you have been out of school for a long time and are no longer in touch with former professors for recommendations, please contact the program director for alternatives.
  • A writing sample. An undergraduate research paper is ideal, or something that shows your ability to do academic writing.
  • A personal statement. Explain why you are applying to the program, what your intellectual interests are, and what you hope to gain from participating.

The GRE is not required for admission.

Finally, although there is not a formal deadline, in order to receive full consideration for grants, it is best to have all four components of your application completed by these dates:

Fall semester:        March 1
Spring semester:   December 1
Summer session:   May 15

Changing to Matriculated Status

Nonmatriculating students who want to change status to matriculated will need to submit a special application form and will be able to transfer only 12 credits of courses taken so far in the program.

Application Status

To check on the status of your application, or for any other questions, contact the liberal studies office at 856-225-6700 or send an email to Graduate Director Stuart Charmé at scharme@rutgers.edu.
