Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.) Curriculum (72 credits) - Social and Behavioral Health Sciences

Students seeking the Dr.P.H. in social and behavioral health sciences degree must complete a minimum of 72 credits of academic work with an average grade of B or better. Courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted.

PREREQUISITE COURSES

  • PHCO 0505 - Social and Behavioral Health Sciences in Public Health
  • SBHS 0651 - Health Education Planning and Evaluation
  • SBHS 0654 - Modifying Health Behaviors: Theory and Practice

CORE COURSES (12 credits)

  • PHCO 0501 - Health Systems and Policy
  • PHCO 0502 - Principles and Methods of Epidemiology
  • PHCO 0503 - Introduction to Environmental Health
  • PHCO 0504 - Introduction to Biostatistics (Prerequisite: Quantitative Skills Assessment)

REQUIRED COURSES (15 credits)

  • SBHS 0678 - Public Health Communications/Risk Communication
  • SBHS 0715 - Evaluation and Research Design for Public Health Interventions
  • SBHS 0685 - Doctoral Seminar in Health Education and Behavioral Science
  • PHEL 0698 - Special Topic for Dr.P.H. Students (1-3 credits)
  • behavioral science electives (3 credits) selected with adviser approval
    Example: SBHS 9557 - Health Psychology

REQUIRED ANALYTICAL COURSES* (9 credits)

  • BIST 0551 - Applied Regression Analysis for Public Health Studies
  • SBHS 0705 - Intermediate Survey Research Methods
  • analytical elective (3 credits) selected with adviser approval

RECOMMENDED PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT/IMPLEMENTATION COURSES* (9 credits)

All social and behavioral health sciences Dr.P.H. students are expected to engage in program development/evaluation activities with their faculty adviser.

*With adviser approval, other courses may satisfy these requirements.

**UPDATE** Please note we are not accepting applications to the Dr.P.H. degree program for the 2018-2019 academic year as we revise the Dr.P.H. curriculum. The Ph.D. degree program is accepting applications and we expect to reopen admissions for the Dr.P.H. degree program in the 2019-2020 academic year.
