Curriculum


Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) Curriculum (45 credits) - Department of Quantitative Methods: Epidemiology and Biostatistics 

Students seeking the M.P.H. in quantitative methods: Epidemiology degree must complete 45 credits of academic work with an average grade of B or better. Courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted.

CORE COURSES (15 credits)

  • PHCO 0501 - Health Systems and Policy
  • PHCO 0502 - Principles and Methods of Epidemiology
  • PHCO 0503 - Introduction to Environmental Health
  • PHCO 0504 - Introduction to Biostatistics (Prerequisite: Quantitative Skills Assessment)
  • PHCO 0505 - Health Education and Behavioral Science in Public Health

Note: Students should take PHCO 0502 and PHCO 0504 as soon as possible after entering the program (preferably in the fall). These courses are prerequisites for upper-level Department of Quantitative Methods (QNME) courses. In addition, students are encouraged to take these courses in Newark.

FIELDWORK (6 credits)

  • FDWC 0600 - Fieldwork I (1 credit)
  • FDWC 0601 - Fieldwork II (5 credits)

Note: Fieldwork should be taken after completing QNME 0611. Students completing a collateral must choose their fieldwork topic in that collateral area.

REQUIRED COURSES (9 credits)

  •  QNME 0584 - Computing II: EPI Info (1 credit)
  •  QNME 0587 - Introduction to SAS for Data Analysis in Public Health (2 credits)
  •  QNME 0611 - Design of Epidemiologic Studies and Clinical Trials
  •  QNME 0612 - Linear Models: Regression and ANOVA

Note: Students are encouraged to take QNME 0584 during the same semester as PHCO 0502 in Newark.

REQUIRED COURSES FOR EPIDEMIOLOGY MAJORS (3 credits)

Choose one of the following three:

  • QNME 0613 - Life Tables and Survival Analysis
  • QNME 0614 - Categorical Data Analysis
  • QNME 0621 - Survey Research Methods Questionnaire Design

REQUIRED COURSES FOR EPIDEMIOLOGY MAJORS WITHOUT A CLINICAL BACKGROUND (3 credits)

Choose one of the following two:

  • QNME 0636 - Principles and Practice of Infectious Disease Diagnosis Part A: Bacteria and Parasites
  • QNME 0637 - Principles and Practice of Infectious Disease Diagnosis Part B: Viruses and Fungi

Note: Students without a clinical background must take one 3-credit course that provides the medical basis for the etiology and prevention of diseases of public health importance.

REQUIRED COURSES FOR COLLATERAL STUDIES IN INJURY EPIDEMIOLOGY (9 credits)
