Program Description

The program is an 80-credit postbaccalaureate degree. The Diagnostics Consultation Model (DCM©) operationalizes the practice of the DCLS as active members of interprofessional health care teams in a variety of settings. These experiences and research require continuous involvement with interprofessional health care teams. The four settings are:
  • Patient Care Intervention (PCI): Daily patient-care clinical rounds with interprofessional health care team: attending physician, residents, medical students, DCLS residents, Pharm.D., nurses, other health care providers.
  • Diagnostics Management Intervention (DMI): Encounters received through direct case management requests to the clinical laboratory with interprofessional team: pathologists, pathology residents, DCLS, clinicians, laboratorians, and other health care providers.
  • Utilization Review Intervention (URI): Encounters through review of reports generated by the LIS rules with interprofessional team: DCLS, pathologists, pathology residents, laboratorians, clinicians, other health care providers, i.e., genetic counselors.
  • Community Intervention (CI): Consumer information response encounters via labtestsonline.org and the ASCLS public consultation network, and other community-based settings.

Research - Conduct clinical and quality outcomes research project during practice/residency year. The scope of interprofessional interactions and the research component are aligned with continuous interaction with other health care providers to establish the DCLS on interprofessional health care teams and work on the clinical outcomes research project.

All pre-residency courses are offered online. The residency is a hybrid learning experience with on-site practice residency and online learning experiences. A course requires a time commitment of approximately 9-12 hours per week with online and off-line work. Part-time status (two courses per semester) requires 18-24 hours a week, and full-time status (three courses per semester) requires approximately 27-36 hours per week. The advanced level courses offer the most current information in the profession and experts in the practice field as guest lecturers. Courses may include synchronous online webinars.
