Rutgers University has a long and fine tradition of
providing a wonderful education, and the School of Criminal Justice is proud to be
a significant contributor to the educational excellence that we value. As dean, I welcome you to the school, and am always keen to hear how our
endeavors can be improved upon to ensure that students and the community reap the maximum benefit.
It is often said that
crime follows opportunity and, in the world in which we live, science
and technology as well as change in social structure and demography create new opportunities. When these opportunities are
realized, crime not only irritates and offends, but hurts, and hurts
deeply. Crime is both very local--it occurs in families and
neighborhoods--and global--the movement of money, goods, and
people across the globe. Preventing and mitigating crime requires
intellect, lots of great skills, and a commitment to evidence and
analysis.
The School of
Criminal Justice has some of the world's leading scholars, who have
devoted many years to research, much of which has been cutting
edge, and who are teaching generations of students who have gone on to career success. The school is here for our students and
for the community--our faculty are among the best, and we are all
fortunate to be in a great university. This combination of factors
will lead to a solid and rewarding education, and I trust
that all our efforts will produce worthwhile results across a wide
spectrum.
I am always happy to hear about how the school is performing and how we can strive to do our best.
