There are a number of required and elective means for students to engage with the information profession.
Prior to beginning graduate studies, students attend a required orientation to introduce them to the program and the profession.
The
noncredit course 17:610:501, required in the first semester of study, is a brief orientation to the Rutgers master of information (M.I.) degree program, the
information professions, basic concepts and vocabulary, and the
literature of the field. Students will gain an overview of the historical
context, scope, and organization of the profession and the concept and
problems which define librarianship and information science as a field
of study; pointers to some of the professional literature and jargon;
and an introduction to the Rutgers M.I. program and faculty.
The noncredit
course 17:610:502 Colloquium should be taken in the second-to-last semester of the degree
program. Students must attend at least three
events that meet the purpose of this noncredit minicourse (see 502
syllabus). On-campus students can attend the live colloquia; online
students can access the colloquia in a live or archived video feed.
