School of Communication and Information 2015–2017 Master of Information Program Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Overview

The faculty regularly revises the master of information (M.I.) curriculum to assure that students interact with the most up-to-date information, technologies, and professional issues. Current information is available on the program website at http://comminfo.rutgers.edu/master-of-library-and-information-science/master-of-information.html.

Courses in the M.I. program are organized around four areas of concentration:

  • Library and information science
  • Data science
  • Technology, information, and management
  • Informatics and design

Each area of concentration has its own required and elective classes.  (As of spring 2016 the requirements in the program will be new; check the program's website for the most up-to-date information.)

Within each concentration there are optional areas of specialization. In particular, the library and information science area offers specializations in:

  • Digital libraries
  • Knowledge management
  • School libraries

Students work with an adviser to design a plan of study by selecting courses to meet their interests and career goals. The program website lists sample Plans of Study for examples. Thirty-six credits, or 12 courses, are required to earn an M.I. degree.

Students pursuing school library media certification must consult with an adviser in order to be assured of both meeting all requirements for the M.I. degree and qualifying for state certification. The Rutgers M.I. program has been approved by the New Jersey Department of Education to meet certification requirements for becoming a School Library Media Specialist when combined with either a valid teaching certificate, proof of completion of a teacher preparation program, or proof of completion of an approved sequence of course in education for school librarians. (The Professional Development Studies program at the School of Communication and Information offers such an approved sequence.)

Required Noncredit Classes

On-Campus and Online Learning
