Placement Examinations for Entering Students


Placement tests are administered to incoming students admitted to the Newark College of Arts and Sciences to evaluate their proficiency in mathematics and English Composition prior to course enrollment. Exemptions from placement testing occurs only in the following cases:

English Composition Exam Exemptions

  • First-year students who receive a score of 580 or above on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing exam will be placed into English Composition 101.
  • First-year students who receive a score of 26 or above on the ACT exam will be placed into English Composition 101.
  • First-year students who are enrolled in the Honors College register through the Honors College to take Honors Composition 103.
  • First-year students who score a 4 or 5 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam will be placed into English Composition 101. Students who receive a score of 4 or 5 on the AP English Literature and Composition exam will receive credit for English Composition 101, unless students have already received English Composition 101 credit by receiving a 4 or 5 on the English Language and Composition exam. In this case, the AP English Literature and Composition will be accepted for English Composition 102.  NOTE: If Rutgers University-Newark has not received your AP placement scores, you MUST still complete the English placement exam.

Mathematics Exam Exemptions

  • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP/AB series (Calculus I) or AP/BC series (Calculus II).  NOTE: If Rutgers University-Newark has not received your AP placement scores, you MUST still complete the mathematics placement exam.

In addition, transfer students who have completed at least one college-level mathematics course at or above the level of college algebra may be exempt from placement testing in mathematics, and those who have completed at least one college-level composition course may be exempt from placement testing in writing. All other entering students must take a placement test in mathematics and writing before they may register for courses. Exemptions for students earning advanced placement (AP) credit are granted only after official reports from the testing organizations have been received by Rutgers and evaluated for credit. Those wishing to register before the official reports are sent will have their placements adjusted once the reports are received and evaluated. Students residing more than 200 miles from campus may be eligible for off-site placement testing.
