International Students

In addition to the standard application, international students must submit the International Student Financial Statement and official bank letter(s) verifying financial support. If an international student is transferring from another U.S. college, the student must also submit the International Student Advisors' Report and copies of all previous I-20 forms issued in the international student's name. All Rutgers forms may be downloaded at http://admissions.rutgers.edu. Official records (original or certified copies) of all previous secondary and postsecondary education, as well as official English translations of these records, are required. It is recommended that international students obtain a credit evaluation of all college work previously completed outside of the United States, documented by an NACES certified credit evaluation service.

An official English proficiency examination score is required for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the United States in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency status. Students who have achieved a grade of B or better in a college-level English Composition course at an accredited U.S. college (not a foreign affiliate) are exempt from this English proficiency examination requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, nonnative, or which require a special support component, as well as courses taken outside the United States or online are not acceptable for the purpose of this exemption.

Rutgers accepts any of the following standardized tests to determine the English proficiency of its international applicants:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): acceptable scores for applicants are 550+ on the paper and pencil test, 213+ on the computer-based test, or 79+ on the internet-based test.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): a score of 6 or higher is acceptable.
  • Michigan English Assessment Battery (MELAB): the minimum acceptable score is 76.

In every case, the official score report must be from a test taken within two years prior to application and the test score result must be submitted directly to the Office of Admissions from the testing service. For more information about English language proficiency requirements, please contact the admissions office at 973-353-5205. For information about intensive English language courses, TOEFL and IELTS preparation courses, and TOEFL, IELTS, and MELAB tests, please contact the Program in American Language Studies at 973-353-5013 or http://pals.newark.rutgers.edu.

To be eligible for a student visa, a student must apply for full-time enrollment at Rutgers University-Newark. For further information, contact the Office of Admissions.
