Credit Load


To be considered a full-time student in the Newark College of Arts and Sciences, an individual must carry a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Students may carry between 1 and 19 credits, but not more than 19 credits per semester without written permission from the Office of Academic Services.

Credit overloads are intended for exceptional students. As a rule, a student must meet all of the following standards for consideration for a credit overload:

  • Cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher
  • Basic writing skills completed
  • Quantitative reasoning completed
  • Major declared with an academic department
  • Successful completion of 24 credits at Rutgers University-Newark
