The specialization in graphic design offers students an educational experience that focuses on preparation for professional practices in visual communication that include design for corporate identity, publication, and package and web design. Within this demanding curriculum, students not only gain exposure to various technical skills and design methods, but they are also exposed to complex theories and processes for problem solving within the field. Along with studio work in design, students take advanced classes that explore art and design history, critical writings, and professional practice. This integration of history, theory, and practice bolsters students' technical skills with tools of observation and analysis that will inform their own work. The goal of the specialization in graphic design is to develop practicing designers that possess the knowledge necessary to become innovative and responsible problem solvers. Students also may take advantage of special internship opportunities in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. During their senior year, students develop a body of advanced-level work that is exhibited in the campus gallery. This exhibition helps build a portfolio of projects for job placement and/or admission to graduate school.
The specialization in graphic design is offered through the Department of Arts, Culture and Media (ACM). ACM houses programs and/or majors in art, graphic design, art history, media studies (with majors in journalism and video production), music, and theater. Each major includes an ACM core sequence requirement. Taking advantage of the range of disciplines in ACM and the campus mission to engage with its community, the core combines an integrated sequence of classes, shaped in large part by projects drawn from the urban region surrounding the university. The sequence consists of three classes: Introduction to Arts, Culture, and Media, a class designated by each program that combines interdisciplinary pedagogy with a student's major, and Advanced Seminar in Arts, Culture, and Media.
