Probation

Students meeting any one or more of the following conditions are automatically on academic probation:

1) a cumulative grade-point average of less than 2.0;

2) semester grade-point averages of less than 2.0 for two consecutive semesters of enrollment at Rutgers University, full time or part time;

3) failure to complete successfully 60 percent or more of all credits attempted within seven years immediately prior to the time of the academic review, including attempts for which W grades are received;

4) failure to enroll in a composition course, or preparatory course, as determined by the established placement standards at the college and prior course history, each and every semester until the writing proficiency requirement is satisfied, unless otherwise advised in writing by the Director of the Writing Program or the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs;

5) failure to enroll in the mathematics course, as prescribed by the placement standards at the college and prior course history, and continue to enroll each and every semester until the mathematics proficiency requirement is satisfied, unless otherwise advised in writing by the Coordinator of Elementary Mathematics or the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs;

6) failure to complete successfully any course after three attempts, including those for which W grades are received.

Students on academic probation must see an adviser and must attend an academic support workshop, for which they may register at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs website. At the discretion of the Scholastic Standing Committee or the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, a course of action to improve the student's academic standing also may be specified in an academic contract, which may include a limitation on extracurricular activities and/or the number of credits carried and/or changes in the student's program of study. Failure to comply with any of the conditions of probation may result in further restrictions on registration or academic dismissal.
