21:355:098 Communication Skills (N4.5) This course provides intensive work in basic reading and writing. It calls for the development of reading comprehension skills and places emphasis on vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, paragraph development, and essay organization.
21:355:099 Communications Skills (2)

This course provides introductory work in the forms of academic reading and writing that will be required in university-level courses. The course calls for expository writing based on nonfiction readings. It emphasizes the development of critical reading skills and the ability to present complex ideas and information to a defined audience in precise language. The course is designed to provide strong preparation for the work that will be expected of students in English Composition 101.

Corequisite: 21:355:001.
21:355:100 Writing Workshop (N1) This workshop offers supplemental instruction and support to students enrolled in English composition courses.
21:355:101 English Composition (3) This course calls for analytical writing based on nonfiction readings. Students are expected to develop a critical understanding of argument, both in the recognition of the strategies of other writers and in the effective management of their own. Students must demonstrate the ability to write accurately, coherently, and thoughtfully about representative academic readings. The course also emphasizes strategies of revision and editing.
21:355:102 English Composition (3) This course calls for extensive analytical writing based on nonfiction and fiction readings. Students develop the critical thinking, reading, and writing skills fostered in 21:355:101. Students are also introduced to library resources and are required to produce writing that draws effectively upon research.
21:355:101-102 English Composition (3,3) Introductory composition sequence for students who have not completed 6 credits in English composition at another institution. These courses are open to students on the basis of placement or prerequisite only. Successful completion of these courses requires grades of C or better.
21:355:103-104 Honors English Composition (3,3) These advanced composition courses are open primarily to students who are enrolled in the Honors Program. Honors English 103, like English Composition 101, focuses on the analysis of nonfiction texts. Honors English 104, like English Composition 102, focuses on the interpretation of both academic and literary texts and calls for some library research. Note: 21:355:103-104 are taken in lieu of 21:355:101-102 and fulfill the English composition requirement.
21:355:306 Advanced Exposition (3) This upper-level writing course offers instruction in planning, revising, editing, and documenting lucid and persuasive preprofessional and professional articles, reports, and research papers. Prerequisites: 21:355:101-102 or equivalent. Specific sections may be designated as writing intensive.
