Public Service Major Requirements
The public service major and minor are offered at the School of Public Affairs and Administration.
The undergraduate public service program offers students a focused interdisciplinary exposure designed to bring students to a deeper understanding of their roles as public servants, in the context of civic engagement. The program provides students with the substantive knowledge, analytical skills, and perspectives needed to respond effectively and fairly to major contemporary social problems. Students majoring in public service receive excellent preparation for further study in the graduate professional schools and careers in public service.
The major requires 50 credits as follows:*
1. Five 3-credit public service core courses:
Public Service as Responsible Citizenship (3) The Urban Experience in the United States (3) Ethical Public Service (3) The Global Urban Experience (WI**) (3) Government and the Nonprofit Sector (3)
2. Two 4-credit Service Learning Internships:
Service-Learning Internship I (4) Service-Learning Internship II (4)
3. Four 3-credit elective courses:
Introduction to Public Administration (3) The Arts and Culture of Public Service (3) Volunteerism and Philanthropy in Public Service (3) Public Service Organizations (3) Leadership for the Service Professions (3) Special Topics Course in Public Service (3) Independent Study Course in Public Service (3) (faculty approval required) Health and Social Justice (3) (psychology elective)
4. Specialization Tracks:
The public service major also requires 15 credits in any of the following specialization tracks for students without a second major or minor. These specialization areas may include: anthropology, criminal justice, business and management, economics, education, global affairs, political science, psychology, social work, journalism, visual and performing arts, women's studies, or any related academic field.
Public Service Minor Requirements
The minor in public service program requires the completion of 18 credits with a grade of C or better, which include the following courses.
Public Service as Responsible Citizenship (3) The Urban Experience in the United States (3) Ethical Public Service (3) The Global Urban Experience (WI**) (3) 6 credits in public service electives
