A major in Spanish consists of 30 credits with a grade of C or better in each course. Students planning to teach Spanish at a K-12 level (including those doing the alternate route) must take Teaching Methodologies for World Languages (615:320) in order to be certified to teach in New Jersey.
In addition, as related courses, majors are required to take 6 credits from one or more of the following as approved by an adviser: English literature (above 215, 216,) philosophy, women's studies, music, art history, journalism, classics, African American literature, linguistics, or an additional foreign language.
For information about teaching certification, students must see the chair of the Urban Teacher Education Program (Bradley Hall, 174) or visit http://edu.newark.rutgers.edu.
In order to determine appropriate placement in the sequence of language courses, students should take the Placement Exam. Request appointment at Conklin 430 or contact Dr. Jennifer Austin (jbaustin@andromeda.rutgers.edu).
*Intermediate Spanish 131 and 132 may be accepted for the major; but no more than 9 credits in skills courses (131, 132, 203, and 204) may count towards the major.
For the major, students must take:
*Introduction to Spanish Peninsular Literature and Introduction to Latin American Literature (207, 208)
*At least 3 credits of Hispanic Civilization (341, 342)
*3 credits in Golden Age or Don Quixote
*3 credits in any 19th-century Spanish Peninsular or Latin American literature
*3 credits in any 20th-century Spanish Peninsular or Latin American literature
*It is recommended that students considering graduate school take Spanish 498 or 499 (Theoretical Approaches to Hispanic Literature or Research Project in Spanish).
