21:086:201,202 Introduction to Media Studies I,II (3,3) Introductory seminar exploring the historical development of journalism in the United States.
21:086:337 Basic Reporting and Newswriting (3) Basic news gathering techniques used at newspapers, magazines, and television and radio stations; fieldwork; stories are written at computers under newsroom conditions. Prerequisite: English Composition 101 and 102 sequence.
21:086:338 Advanced Reporting (3) Urban affairs reporting; police headquarters, city hall, courts, boards of education, and other urban beats. Prerequisite: 21:086:337.
21:086:342 Special Topics in Communication (3) Examination of specific issues in media. Computer-assisted reporting; techniques for acquiring records; the investigative interview; rights of reporters; and a final project earmarked for professional publications. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing; 21:086:201 and 337.
21:086:344 Journalism, Ethics, and the Law (3) Libel, ethics, and media law; emphasis on protection of sources, privacy, fair trial, free press, controversy, and freedom of information statutes. Prerequisite: 21:086:201.
21:086:346 Independent Study in Journalism and Media Studies (3) A special journalism project for qualified students, conducted with a member of the faculty. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing; 21:086:201 and 337.
21:086:387 Radio Newswriting (3) An introduction to newswriting for radio.
21:086:391 Writing for Publication (3) Advanced feature and article writing; students function as editorial board, discussing ideas for news features and magazine articles, and offering constructive criticism to each member-writer; students must produce a newspaper feature and a magazine article; the process is from query letter to finished feature and article. Prerequisites: English Composition 101 and 102 sequence; 21:086:201 and 337. Writing sample must be presented to instructor before registration.
21:086:400 Topics in Journalism (3) Study in a specialized field of journalism, such as radio journalism, magazine writing, or urban journalism. Prerequisites: English Composition 101 and 102 sequence; 21:086:201 and 337.
21:086:455,456 Journalism Masters (Capstone) (3,3) Reading and reporting in depth in one field of journalism, such as narrative or literary journalism. Prerequisites: English Composition 101 and 102 sequence; 21:086:201, 202, 337 and 338.
21:086:459,460 Journalism Internship (3,3) For those who have demonstrated superior skill in their field; work at least one day a week at a newspaper, magazine, broadcasting station, or public relations firm. Evaluation by staff executives of the participating organization. Open only to advanced students.
21:086:493,494 Newsroom Workshop (3,3) Seminar for advanced students on a semester project; professional-level performance in newspapers and broadcast organizations. Prerequisites: 21:086:201, 337, 338, or permission of program coordinator.
