The purpose of these guidelines is to protect persons from
communicable disease. The means to accomplish this are specified by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Use of Standard Precautions. Standard
precautions must be used in all patient-care situations (refer to
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines).
Accidental Needle Stick. Students
who receive an accidental needle stick must follow the clinical
agency's protocol and are advised to submit to anonymous testing
immediately, with follow-up, according to the policies of University
Health Services of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The fee
for the emergency room service is billed to the student`s health
insurance company. All incidents of needle stick must be reported in
writing to the associate dean of student affairs.
Students Who Test Positive for a Communicable Disease.
Students who test positive for or are exposed to a reportable
communicable disease should report these findings to the associate dean
of student affairs. Those students who test positive for communicable
disease are encouraged to use existing support services.
