High school seniors who have taken advanced courses may take the College Board Advanced Placement Examinations administered by the College Board. Advanced placement and/or degree credit is awarded for scores of 4 or 5.
All newly admitted first-year students will take Rutgers University's placement tests. Transfer students entering Rutgers without an equivalent English writing course or math course will also be required to take placement tests. Placement test results provide information about course placement.
Placement Exam Exemptions
Newark Campus
English Exam Exemption:
- New students who receive an average score of 550 or above on the written and verbal portions of the SAT on the old SAT Critical Reading exam (prior to March 2016)
- New students who receive an average score of 580 or above on the on the new SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing exam (March 2016 to present)
- New students who receive above 26 on the ACT
- New students accepted into the Honors College will be automatically placed in an honors level English Composition Course
- New students who score a 4 or 5 on the AP English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition
- New students who have completed Rutgers University-Newark's equivalent of 21:355:101 or 21:355:102 with a grade of C or better will NOT need to take the placement exam. PLEASE NOTE: Writing course below 100 level will not exempt you from testing.
Mathematics Exam Exemption:
- A score of 4 or 5 on the AP/AB series (Calculus I) or AP/BC (Calculus II)
New Brunswick Campus
Students who meet the following criteria are exempt from taking the placement test:- Exemptions-Math Testing
- AP Exam in Calculus AB or BC with score of 4 or 5
- Exemptions-English Testing
- Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) SAT score of 650 or higher
- Critical Reading SAT score of 650 or higher (by January test)
- ACT Reading score of 32 or higher (by January test)
- AP Exam in English Lang/Comp with score of 4 or 5 (already completed before testing)*
- AP Exam in English Lit/Comp with score of 4 or 5 (already completed before testing)*
