Advanced Placement


High school seniors who have taken advanced courses may take the College Board Advanced Placement Examinations administered by the College Board. Advanced placement and/or degree credit is awarded for scores of 4 or 5.

All newly admitted first-year students will take Rutgers University's placement tests. Transfer students entering Rutgers without an equivalent English writing course or math course will also be required to take placement tests. Placement test results provide information about course placement.

Placement Exam Exemptions

Newark Campus
English Exam Exemption:
  • New students who receive an average score of 550 or above on the written and verbal portions of the SAT
  • New students who score a 4 or 5 on the AP English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition
Mathematics Exam Exemption:
  • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP/AB series (Calculus I) or AP/BC (Calculus II)
New Brunswick Campus
English Exam Exemptions:
  • Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) SAT score of 600 or higher (by January 2017 test)
  • Critical reading SAT score of 600 or higher (by January 2017 test)
  • ACT English score of 30 or higher (by January 2017 test)
  • AP Exam in English Lang/Comp or English Lit/Comp with score of 4 or 5 (already completed before 2017)
  • Please note: exemptions only count if scores have been sent to Rutgers University
