Program Goals


Program Goal

In accordance with recommendations from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the goal of Rutgers' doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) program in nursing is to prepare nurse scientists who will expand the knowledge base of nursing, steward the discipline of nursing, lead interdisciplinary research teams, influence health policy, and mentor the next generation of nurses and nurse scientists.

Student Goals
  • Possess knowledge of the history and philosophy of nursing science.
  • Master in-depth knowledge in a substantive area, including the relevant theoretical and empirical literatures.
  • Conduct original, ethical, and culturally competent research.
  • Collaborate effectively with other research disciplines and lead interdisciplinary research teams. 
  • Disseminate research findings to a wide variety of audiences including practitioners, policymakers, and the scientific community.
  • Mentor future nurse clinicians, educators, and scientists.
