Major Requirements

The department offers a major with a strong emphasis on research. A minimum of 20 credits of coursework in the life sciences must be completed in residence. Genetics is a credit-intensive major. Excluding the prerequisite courses (25-26 credits) to get into the major (see above), there are between 54-56 credits to complete the major (60-62 for honors). A grade of "C" or better in courses credited toward the major is required for graduation, and each course may be repeated only once to replace D/F grades. Students may not double major in two Division of Life Sciences majors.

A. Life Science Core Courses (19-21 credits) - Required for all DLS Majors (Approved AP and Transfer credits may be substituted)

B. Genetics Core (17 credits) - Required for all Genetics Majors- All below credits must be completed at Rutgers

            Note:  2.8 minimum GPA to register for research

            Fifty percent must be taken within the Genetics Major (i.e.; 01:447)

E.  Electives OR Independent Scholarship (6 credits)

            Note:  Additional Genetics Lab may be used as an elective

Lab Note: 01:694:214 and 01:694:215 are only offered to first-year students with AP Biology credit and AP General Chemistry credits (or taking General Chemistry concurrently). 01:447:203 is only offered to first-year students in the SAS Honors Program or the Honors College. Students cannot receive credit for both 01:447:203 and 01:447:302.
