01:119:098 Foundations for Biological Science (E2) Selected topics in general biology: introduction to cellular organization, metabolism, genetics, reproduction, and organ systems. Development of analytical reasoning and science-oriented study techniques. Preparation for college-level general biology.
01:119:103 Principles of Biology (4)
Selected topics in general biology, including cell structure, genetics, plant and animal diversity, basic plant and animal biology, ecology, and evolution.
Lec. 3 hrs., lab. 3 hrs. Designed for students who must take a one-semester laboratory course in introductory biology to meet major requirements. Credit not given for this course if student has already completed 01:119:115. Not for life sciences major credit.
01:119:109,110 Biology Practice Group (1,1) Students will work actively to (1) organize the lecture content, (2) identify what they are expected to do with that content (outcomes), (3) prepare and explain study aids (organizers) to ensure that they correctly understand the week¿s content, and (4) begin the self-evaluation process to gauge exam preparedness. Discussion of the basic methods and principles.

01:119:116 General Biology II (4) Broad principles of cell biology, genetics, and evolution; the diversity of life and its physiology, ecology, and population dynamics. Lec. 3 hrs., Wkshp. 80 min. Prerequisite: 01:119:115 with a grade of C or better. Credit not given for both this course and 01:119:102.
01:119:117 Biological Research Laboratory (2) Laboratory designed to introduce and explore principles of research in the biological sciences by engaging in semester-long research projects requiring students to analyze data, synthesize new experiments, and evaluate findings. Prerequisite: 01:119:115 with a grade of C or better. Corequisite: 01:119:116.
01:119:120 STEM Success Seminar (1.5) Increases ability to control academic success and improve transition to the university environment in furtherance of educational and career goals. Reflection on recent and current academic experience and career aspirations. Setting of priorities and alignment of time and effort towards those ends. By special permission only.
01:119:127-128 Anatomy and Physiology: Health Sciences (4,4)
Structure and function of human organ systems. Some microanatomy and biochemical aspects of physiology included.

01:119:131 Microbiology for the Health Sciences (3) Introduction to microbes with emphasis on the nature and behavior of microorganisms, the interrelationships between microbes and the human host in health and disease, and the principles of prevention and control of infectious disease.
Not open to students who have taken 01:447:390. For nursing and other professional students. Not for life sciences major credit. Prerequisites: 01:199:115-116 or 01:119:127-128.
01:119:132 Microbiology for the Health Sciences Laboratory (1) Laboratory to accompany 01:119:131. Lab. 3 hrs. Pre- or corequisite: 01:119:131.
01:119:140 The DNA Revolution (Honors) (3) Introduction to fundamentals of molecular genetics, biotechnology, and modern genetics, including a laboratory research project using molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques. Intended primarily for nonscience majors, but may also appeal to prospective chemists, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists. Restricted to first-year and sophomore students in the School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program or the Honors College. Credit not given for both this course and 01:119:140 or 01:694:215 or 315, or 01:447:315. Not for life sciences major credit.
01:119:148 Moving Bodies: The Biology of Movement (3)
Considers fundamental processes that allow humans and other animals to move, including structural basis (bones and muscles), control (brain and nervous system), conversion of food into energy (digestion and nutrition), movement of food and oxygen to muscles (circulation), and some common and familiar injuries and illnesses and their treatments.
Credit not given for both this course and 01:119:100, 103, 115-116, or 127-128. Not for life sciences major credit.
01:119:150 Biology, Society, and Biomedical Issues (3) Discussion of current topics and issues in human health and medicine from a biological perspective. Credit not given for both this course and 11:115:100. Not for life sciences major credit.
01:119:154 Genetics, Law, and Social Policy (3) Principles of human and behavioral genetics and their legal, ethical, and social implications. Topics include genetic screening, counseling, and engineering; reproductive regulation; and human behavior genetics. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. Not for life sciences major credit or related major.
01:119:155 Human Genetics (3) How our genes influence our development and health, how both normal traits and diseases are transmitted through families, how genetics is used in forensics and personalized medicine, and the genetic tests that are offered directly to consumers. Not for life sciences major credit.
01:119:156 Genetics, Evolution, and Human Health (4) The human body and human behavior, shaped by more than four billion years of evolutionary processes. Scientific and social implications of current ideas and controversies of evolution and genetics. Not for life sciences major credit.
01:119:160 Biology, Society, and Ecological Issues (3) Ecological and evolutionary ideas affecting space ecology; population increase, food supply, air and water pollution, war, and nuclear energy. Not for life sciences major credit or related major.
01:119:182 Essentials of Human Reproduction (3)
Anatomical and physiological bases of human sexuality; biological and cultural aspects of sexual differentiation and psychosexual development, contraception, venereal disease, and sexual lifestyles.

01:119:195 Brain, Mind, and Behavior (3) Honors course discussing the interrelationship between the brain, the mind, and behavior.

01:119:199 Preparation for General Biology (4) For first- and second-year students planning science majors. Enrollment based on placement scores. Selected concepts in biology, proven learning strategies for college science courses, and instruction in the scientific method. 01:119:201-202 Independent Study in Biology (1-3,1-3) Independent study under the direction of a member of the faculty. Written report required. Prerequisites: Declared biological sciences major or minor. Permission of the Office of Undergraduate Instruction; cumulative grade-point average of 2.8 or better. May not be used to fulfill a laboratory requirement.
01:119:204 Outreach in Biology (1) Introduction to the basic principles and best practices of outreach in the biological sciences. Emphasis on understanding how to translate technical concepts and techniques to lay audiences incorporating best practices in active learning, public speaking and curriculum development.  Recommended for students interested in teaching careers and related positions in science communication. Prerequisites: 01:119:115, 01:119:116, and  01:119:117. By special permission.
01:119:205 Internship in Life Sciences (3) Development of experience and knowledge regarding the expectations, qualifications, competencies and responsibilities of professionals working within the life sciences through an internship experience with academic component. Integration of knowledge from life science coursework with the internship experience, development of new skills, and reflection on the learning experience. Prerequisites: 01:119:116 and 01:119:117.  Open only to 119 Biology Majors.
01:119:307-308 Research in Biology (1-3,1-3)
Laboratory/field research on an original problem under the direction of a member of the faculty. Written report required. 
Prerequisites: Declared biological sciences major or minor. Permission of the Office of Undergraduate Instruction; cumulative grade-point average of 2.8 or better. Open only to students majoring (or minoring) in biological sciences.
01:119:310 Communication in Biology (1) Effective skills for communicating science to a variety of audiences in a variety of forms including papers, grant proposals, teaching, and presentations to scientists and others. Provides support for students completing the 10-page research paper required for Research in Biology. Prerequisites: 01:119:307, 308, 407, or 408. Corequisites: 01:119:307, 308, 407, or 408.
01:119:311 Current Topics in Life Sciences (1) Directed readings and discussion of selected scientific topics and career stories with Rutgers Life Sciences Alumni. Junior or senior status and Division of Life Sciences major (subject code: 119, 146, 694, 447).
01:119:401 Clinical Practicum in the Health Professions (3) Development of advanced knowledge of and reflection on the qualifications, competencies, and responsibilities of physician health care providers through an internship experience and academic component integrating knowledge from life science coursework and the health care setting. Prerequisites: 3.4 science GPA. By special permission of the Office of Undergraduate Instruction only.
01:119:406-407 Research in Biology (1-4,1-4) Laboratory/field research on an original problem under the direction of a member of the faculty. Written report is required. Prerequisites: Declared biological sciences major or minor. Permission of the Office of Undergraduate Instruction; cumulative grade-point average of 2.8 or better. Open only to seniors majoring (or minoring) in biological sciences.
01:119:408-409 Honors in Biology (3-6,3-6)
Laboratory/field research on an original problem under the direction of a member of the faculty. Written thesis, oral presentation, and defense are required.
Prerequisites: Declared biological sciences major. Permission of the Office of Undergraduate Instruction. Open only to seniors majoring in biological sciences who meet the requirements for departmental honors.    
01:119:410 Honors Communication in Biological Sciences (1) Instruction on effective communication of scientific ideas and findings for both the scientific community as well as the general public. Support in writing honors theses and preparing for oral thesis defenses. Prerequisite: 01:119:408. Corequisite: 01:119:409.
