NEED TO CHECK OPTIONS
The French major consists of 33
credits. Students majoring in French may choose between the Language Intensive and
the Interdisciplinary options. All French majors are strongly urged to spend at
least one semester in residence in the French House and/or to participate in a
program of study in a French-speaking country.
A grade-point average of
2.0 in all French courses taken at Rutgers is required of all majors.
Language
Intensive Option
The
Language Intensive Option is designed for students who want to build advanced
language proficiency in French. The option fosters cultural fluency,
intercultural skills, and global literacy through critical exploration of
cultural production in French. It consists of 33 credits above the introductory
level including Intermediate French (131 and 132, or 137 alone) and at least 3
credits in Advanced French (201, 210, 213, 214, 224); 6 credits in literature
(215 or 217; 216 or 218); at least 15 credits at the 300-level and above, with
3 credits in the study of French and Francophone civilization (315 or 316).
Students may take up to 9 credits in approved English-taught courses. All
students must take a senior seminar (480, 481) or an equivalent capstone at the
400-level, usually in the fall of their senior year. 6 of the required
upper-level credits must be taken with faculty in the Department of French (New
Brunswick).
Interdisciplinary Option
The
Interdisciplinary Option allows students to combine knowledge, skills and
abilities acquired in several disciplines or areas of study, including French.
It is designed to foster language proficiency, cultural awareness,
intercultural skills and global literacy through critical exploration of
cultural production in French-speaking regions. It consists of 33 credits,
including 102 or 121, 131 and 132 (or 137), and at least 3 credits in Advanced
French (213, 214 or 224); 3 credits in literature taught in French (215, 216,
217, 218, or approved equivalent); plus 12 or more credits at the 300-level or
above taught in English or French, including a 3-credit capstone experience at
the 400-level. Up to 6 credits may be taken in another department as part of
the major requirements, provided that these courses focus on subjects relevant
to French/Francophone cultures and are approved in writing by a departmental
advisor. At least 6 of the required upper-level credits must be taken with
faculty in the Department of French (New Brunswick).
