Classics majors choose one of four options. Those who wish to concentrate on one or both ancient languages may choose an option in ancient Greek and Latin, ancient Greek, or Latin. The classical humanities option is for those who wish to pursue a general study of the history, literature, and culture of the classical world. All courses applied to the major must be completed with a grade of C or better.
Classical Humanities Option (Classical Humanities 190). A major who pursues the classical humanities option must complete 36 credits in the department. (Credits from approved classical humanities courses in other departments may be counted among these, as well as courses with a 190, 490, or 580 subject code.) The following are required of every classical humanities major: 1) one course in the Greek or Latin language at the 200 level or above; 2) at least six courses at the 300-level or above.
Greek Option (Greek 190b). A student majoring in classics with emphasis on Greek must take 35 credits in the department, of which 26 credits must be in the ancient Greek language (including at least six courses at the 300 level or above).
Greek and Latin Option (Greek and Latin 190c). A student majoring in classics with emphasis on Greek and Latin must take 35 credits in the department, of which at least 29 credits must be in the ancient Greek and Latin languages. The credits may be distributed between the two languages, but at least 11 credits must be taken in each language. At least six courses must be at the 300 level.
Latin Option (Latin 190d). A student majoring in classics with emphasis on Latin must take 35 credits in the department, of which at least 26 credits must be in the Latin language (including at least six courses at the 300 level or above).
