01:098:101 Elementary Filipino (4) Introduction to sound, grammar, and writing system of Tagalog; practice and exercises in speaking, reading, and writing.
01:098:102 Elementary Filipino (4) Continued acquisition of conversational skills; deeper understanding of the language's grammar and syntax; broadening of vocabulary and feel for contemporary Tagalog, or Filipino. Focus on real situations and modes of interaction. Prerequisite: 01:098:101 or equivalent.
01:098:111 Elementary Vietnamese (4) Introduction to sound, grammar, and writing system of modern Vietnamese; practice and exercises in speaking, reading, and writing.
01:098:112 Elementary Vietnamese (4) Basic skills requisite for modern conversational Vietnamese. Communicative and interactive listening and speaking skills; higher register of written Vietnamese. Introduction to folktale literature with written critiques. Prerequisite: 01:098:111 or equivalent.  
01:098:151 Elementary Manchu (4) Introduction to sound, grammar, and writing system of Manchu; practice and exercises in speaking, reading, and writing.
01:098:201 Intermediate Tagalog/Culture I (3) Further practice in conversational skills learned in Elementary Filipino, grammar and syntax of the language, and building of a vocabulary and feel for natural, contemporary Tagalog, or Filipino. Includes contextual lessons in Philippine history, culture, values, and literature, to be conducted progressively, depending on the class's aptitude, in Tagalog. Prerequisite: 01:098:102 or equivalent.
01:098:202 Intermediate Tagalog/Culture II (3) Continued understanding and appreciation of contemporary Tagalog and its cultural context; improving grasp of grammatical and syntactical principles. Expanded vocabulary and improved reading, speaking, and writing skills. Deepened familiarity with Tagalog as a living tongue by examining its cultural, literary, and historical contexts. Prerequisite: 01:098:201 or equivalent.
01:098:215 Introduction to Vietnamese Literature in Translation (3) Introduces traditional Vietnamese literature from its beginnings in the early second millennium to the advent of the French conquest in the mid-19th century.
No knowledge of Vietnamese language necessary.
01:098:235 Mongolian Literature in Translation (3) Examines the development of modern Mongolian literature since the socialist revolution of 1921, as an expression of the broader social, political, and cultural forces which have shaped Mongolia during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.
01:098:241 East Asian Civilizations: Premodern Era (3) Introduction to traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean civilizations, including governmental institutions, educational systems, belief systems, language, literature, art, and everyday life. Credit not given for both this course and 01:214:241.
01:098:242 East Asian Civilizations: Modern Era (3) Introduction to modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean civilizations, including the impact of modernization, East-West contact, governmental institutions, belief systems, educational systems, language, literature, art, and everyday life. Credit not given for both this course and 01:214:242.
01:098:250 Global East Asia (3) Critical analysis of social, cultural, and political narratives and counter-narratives used to describe and discuss East Asia. Global and regional dynamics and interrelated issues of modernity, war, gender, and the geopolitical balance of power, shaping events of the 21st century.
01:098:262 Asian American Experience: Identity and Ethnicity (3) Introduction to the historical and intercultural understanding of the social, political, and cultural dynamics of Asian immigrant communities and identity formation in America. Credit not given for both this course and 01:050:245.
01:098:321 Interdisciplinary Topics in South Asia (3) Interdisciplinary introduction to the cultures of South Asia: geographic foundations, extended family, village-centered society, agricultural systems, and confrontation of Hindu and Muslim traditions with Western technology.
01:098:322 Selected Interdisciplinary Topics in East Asia (3) Interdisciplinary introduction to the cultures of East Asia: geographic foundations, extended family, village-centered society, agricultural systems, and confrontation of Chinese and Japanese traditions with Western technology.
01:098:326 Immorality Suffering and Retribution in the Great Romances of East Asia (3) This course provides an introduction to vernacular narrative traditions of East Asia. Credit not given for both this course and 01:165:326, 01:565:326, or 01:574:326.   
01:098:340 TransAsia: A Transnation History of Asia, Gender, and Sexuality (3) Transnational history of Asia; how (trans)regional movements in peoples, ideas, commodities, technologies, and capital have shaped and been shaped by gender/sexuality.
01:098:373 Classical Tibetan (3) Introduction to the grammar and writing system of classical Tibetan, working directly with original Buddhist texts.
01:098:393 Independent Study of Asian Languages and Literatures (3) Intensive study of a specific Asian language and/or literature not covered in regularly scheduled classes.

01:098:473 The Silk Road: A History of Cultural and Material Exchanges (3) An interdisciplinary introduction to the history of the Silk Road with a focus on the cultural and material exchanges between the peoples and cultures it connected over the period from 500 BCE to 1500 CE.
