The education as a social science minor is designed for
students interested in investigating learning and teaching in a broad range of
human contexts. This minor takes a
multidisciplinary approach to the study of educative practices and is premised
on several key assumptions:- Learning and
teaching are fundamental human and cultural processes.
- Education is
intimately bound up with social, cultural, economic, and political systems.
- Reflection
and inquiry are powerful tools for exploring teaching and learning in all human
contexts.
Through a minor in education, students will examine each of
these assumptions by investigating educative practices in and outside of formal
settings. There are many ways in which a
student can complete the minor.
- Educational
Policy and Social Justice. This
concentration will permit students to focus on issues related to the history of
American education, race and American schools, and queer issues in schools.
- Creativity
and Play. This concentration will permit
students to focus on creativity and imagination in professional settings, the
arts and the young child, and the role of play in education.
Global
Education. This concentration will
provide students with grounding in the areas of global education, issues of
migration and education, and comparative education across countries.
Exceptional
Learners. This concentration provides
students with knowledge of both gifted education and education for students
with learning disabilities.
- General
Studies. This concentration will allow
students to take a menu of courses in education tailored to one's own
interests; this concentration is also appropriate for students in the five-year
urban teacher education program.
