Pharm.D./M.B.A.
The Pharm.D./M.B.A. is designed for students who wish to add business expertise to their professional pharmacy education. Pharm.D. students may earn advanced standing in the Rutgers Business School: Graduate Programs-Newark and New Brunswick (RBS) master of business administration (M.B.A.) program for some of their required and elective Pharm.D. courses. Pharm.D. students, who meet academic eligibility requirements, may apply to the Rutgers Business School: Graduate Programs-Newark and New Brunswick in their fourth professional year. If accepted, students matriculate into RBS immediately after completion of the Pharm.D., or they may defer enrollment for one year. With advanced standing, full-time students will complete the M.B.A. in approximately 15 months; part-time students need approximately three years to complete the program.
Pharm.D./M.P.H.
The Pharm.D./master of public health (M.P.H.) program is designed to provide students with in-depth complementary training as pharmacists and public health experts. The Pharm.D./M.P.H. is offered jointly with the School of Public Health. Graduates will build on their pharmacy training with a sound understanding of public health fields, such as organization of health services, pharmacoepidemiology, health care policy, biostatistics, and environmental health. Students meeting the eligibility requirements may apply for admission during the second professional year or later after completing two public health core courses. Students enroll in the School of Public Health after they complete the Pharm.D. program. With advanced standing, full-time students may finish the M.P.H. in one year; part-time students need approximately three years to compete the program.
Pharm.D./Ph.D.
The Pharm.D./Ph.D. degree option is designed to
meet the needs
and interests of exceptionally bright and highly motivated students
wishing to
pursue the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Students are eligible to apply for entry into
the
graduate program in pharmaceutical science, the joint graduate program
in
toxicology, or the program in medicinal chemistry by the end of the second professional year of the Pharm.D.
program.
Applicants must meet the entry criteria, including academic performance
standards and Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores as set by the graduate
program
and an interview with a member of the dual-degree faculty committee.
Admitted
students will continue in the Pharm.D. program and complete graduate
courses
and/or research during the summer and also in place of professional
electives.
Students will complete the Pharm.D. and graduate at the end of the
fourth
professional year. They will remain in graduate school for approximately
three
years while engaging predominantly in research with a mentor and
advisory
committee. Over this time the student will complete required coursework
and
conduct research in accordance with the curriculum of the graduate
program and
will fulfill the requirements of both degrees in six plus three years.
The
program is highly individualized to the student's research interests.
Pharm.D./M.D.
The
Pharm.D./doctor of medicine (M.D.) dual-degree option, developed jointly by Rutgers' Ernest Mario School
of Pharmacy and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RSJMS), is the first dual degree of
its kind in the United States. Only currently enrolled Pharm.D. students at the Ernest Mario
School of Pharmacy are eligible to apply for admission. This highly selective program is designed to create an elite cadre of
interdisciplinary practitioners, highly skilled in the disciplines of both
pharmacy and medicine, and poised to provide leadership in collaborative
clinical practice, academic research, public policy, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Applicants
must be in the second or third year of the professional program at the School of
Pharmacy and have an excellent academic record, typically with a GPA of 3.5 or
better. Clinical and/or research
experience, service, and leadership are also essential. Prospective students
should pursue opportunities to engage in clinical settings, participate in
interprofessional programs, and work with student organizations to provide community
service in health-related fields. Applicants are first screened by a School of
Pharmacy committee; successful applicants are then referred to the Robert Wood
Medical School for additional screening and for a final decision on admission.
Dual-degree
students are encouraged to participate in interprofessional programs with
students in other fields of health care. In their final year at the School of
Pharmacy, they are assigned to specialized clinical clerkships emphasizing
collaborative practice with medical students and physicians. Once students
begin the RWJMS curriculum, specialized enrichment options will provide
opportunities to take advantage of their extensive knowledge of pharmacology, pharmacotherapy,
and pharmacy practice. A capstone experience brings together their interests
and experiences in pharmacy and medicine. The dual degree program requires two
years of preprofessional study, four years in the Pharm.D. program, and four years
in medical school.
