Graduation Requirements for the Major


 

A.  Major Requirements (66-78 credits)

All students majoring in exercise science and sport studies must complete two core courses of 4.5 credits, plus one of four options: applied kinesiology; exercise science; exercise physiology; sport management. The course requirements for the options vary between 66 to 78 credits. To graduate with the exercise science and sports studies major, students must have at least a 2.0 grade-point average from the required courses within the options of applied kinesiology and sport management, or a 3.0 grade-point-average within the options of exercise science and exercise physiology. Please refer to the SAS section of the catalog for the Exercise Science and Sport Studies major for a full description of the requirements of the major.


B.  Additional SEBS Core Requirements for Students Majoring in Exercise Science and Sport Studies (30-37 credits)



I.  School Mission: Interdisciplinary Critical Analysis (3 credits)

One 3-credit Junior/Senior Colloquium (See the Degree Requirements chapter

for a description of this requirement.) Note: Some Junior/Senior Colloquia also

fulfill the Professional Ethics requirement (see Area VIII below).


II.  Introductory Life and Physical Sciences (0-7 credits)

For students in the exercise science option or the exercise physiology option, this requirement is automatically fulfilled by the introductory biology and chemistry requirements of the options. Students in the sport management option or the general option, this requirement is as follows:

A.  Life Sciences (4 credits)

01:119:103 (4 credits) or equivalent

B.  Physical Sciences (3 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter.


III.  Humanities and the Arts (6 credits)

                See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter.

               

                IV.  Multicultural and International Studies (6 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter. Students in the exercise science option should note that the course 01:377:324 Movement Experiences for Individuals with Disabilities can be used to fulfill 3 credits of this requirement.

               

                V.  Human Behavior, Economic Systems, and Political Processes (9

                credits)

               A. Human Behavior (3 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter. Students in the exercise physiology and sport management options should note that this requirement can be met with the required course 01:830:101 General Psychology (3).
B.  Economic Systems (3 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter. Students in the sport management option should note that they will automatically fulfill this requirement with the economics courses required by the option.

C.  Political Processes (3 credits)

See suggested courses in the Degree Requirements chapter.

                

                  VI.  Oral and Written Communication (6 credits)

01:355:101 Expository Writing (3) and at least one intermediate or advanced course suggested in the Degree Requirements chapter. Students in the sport management option should note that the requirement for the intermediate or advanced course is automatically fulfilled by the writing and public speaking courses that are required for the option.

                

                  VII.  Experience-Based Education

This requirement is automatically fulfilled by the internship required for all students in the major.

 

  VIII.  Professional Ethics in Exercise Science and Sport Studies

                This requirement is met by required courses in the major, namely

                01:377:406  Management in Exercise Science and Sport (required for

                the exercise science and sport management options); 01:377:407

                Administration in Exercise Science and Applied Kinesiology

                (required for the exercise science and the applied kinesiology options);

                and 01:377:419 Risk Management for Health and Fitness

                Professionals (required for the exercise physiology option).


 

C.  Unspecified Electives (0-15)

In addition to courses meeting the above requirements, students can take any other courses offered by the university, for which they meet the course eligibility requirements, to bring their total number of credits to the minimum of 128 required for graduation. Depending on the minor chosen, the total requirements of the major, the SEBS core and the SEBS minor or certificate program may exceed 128 credits. In the case of a minor requiring the minimum of 18 credits, the number of unspecified electives available to students should be 4-9 for students in the exercise science option; 6.5-11.5 for students in the exercise physiology option; and 13 for students in the sport management option.
