Art history majors are required to complete 33 credits in the department, including the introductory courses 01:082:105,106; at least 3 credits in five of the six following areas: ancient, medieval, renaissance and baroque, modern, study abroad, and nonwestern. All art history majors must take the
department's one-semester Seminar in Art History (01:082:491, 01:082:492). The seminar should be completed during the junior year. If
exceptional circumstances, such as participation in a Junior Year Abroad
program, make this impossible, students may seek special permission from the
undergraduate adviser to enroll as seniors. The course content depends upon the
individual instructor, but all students present an oral report and write a
research paper. Art history majors may also choose and are strongly encouraged
to take a second one-semester seminar in art history. This second seminar can be
used to fulfill an area requirement related to the topic of the seminar. To
enroll in the seminars, majors must obtain a special permission number. The seminars are not open to sophomores.
Only courses completed with grades of C or better are counted toward the major. Art history students considering graduate school are urged to study German and French. Students should visit the art history website for updates and changes in the program at http://arthistory.rutgers.edu.
